Style is all about Balance

When I see someone walking into my office building on a hot day, and all their skin is showing with a low cut top, short skirt and high shoes, I shudder. One of those items is fine, all together is a train wreck. For instance, really cool high, high heels or wedges, (even a subtle gladiator) is more than fine with a well cut pant and oxford shirt. Why? Because the pants leg will cover the shoe, and the shoe will just peek out. Enough!

If the hair is all done up to beat the band, calm the rest down by wearing a very low key outfit and shoe. Too much hair, too much everything else screams bad things.

A good example of balance is a preppy outfit with a uber high wedge. Cool!
Another, dangly earrings, a chunky necklace and multiple bracelets. One of those items is more than enough.

Balance is hard to attain. But if we really think about it, it can be had.
Case in point, shown here on left, Sharon Stone at the 1996 Oscars in a designer evening suit with a Gap turtleneck. Hair and makeup are glowing, and played down by the shirt. She could have easily gone the other extreme. She was at the Oscars after all. But this is balance and subtlety at its best.
