Sun Worship

No one loves the sun more than me.  I grew up on the beach and have since lived in Florida for 6 years as well as spending 12 summers on the beach in Maine.  In the old days, our gang would go to Jones Beach on Long Island and cover ourselves with baby oil and iodine, then sit with reflectors on our faces.  Oh yeah.  Just got back from sunny Florida where I did go to the beach and pool, sat under an umbrella, or went out after 3 p.m. and always wore a hat.  Thankfully, the sun has always bothered my eyes, so I have worn a hat or visor for many of the sun loving years.

I have about 7 places on my body including my face/nose/ear that have been affected with skin cancer and have been removed.  It has not been fun.  When I DO go in the sun now, I TRY to just put my legs in the sun, with my back to the sun wearing a big hat.  And of course, wear sunscreen.  Hopefully it has helped.

My sister who is 76 has been going through some scary stuff from her sun worshipping all these years.  She is at her wits end, and the only thing I can tell her is tell your children and grandchildren what happens from sun worship.  It's not pretty, it's not fun, it's very painful both physically and emotionally.  She says her face is carved up at this point and she doesn't want to go for any more surgery.

This is what the sun gets us.  Please, the girls coming up, don't do what we did.

Coupons

Remember when coupons were for the 'little people'?  We would rather go hungry than use one, right?  Sites like GroupOn and LivingSocial are making them cool.  Nothing irks me more than sitting in a restaurant paying full price when someone at an adjoining table mentions Groupon to the Waiter.  Check out your city for deals on everything from food to exercise classes to yoga to shopping.  Just noticed that one of my favorites is on there this week.  50% off $50.  That's huge!  Dinner for two for $25.  Yay!!

Vacation Thoughts?

So I am sitting here on this ugly, gray, wet winter day, thinking it's time to plan a summer vacation.   I am really thinking USA this year, as last year we went to Europe and it was a fortune.  Thinking California for that matter.  Thinking Marin County, Bolinas for that matter.  Scoping out Tripadvisor which is usually my bible when I have such thoughts and scoped this review out for one of the FEW hotels/B&B's/whatever in Bolinas.  Enticing!  Honestly I laughed out loud at this one..

“Dirty sheets, but close to the beach”

Reviewed July 24, 2010 3people found this review helpful

This was an AWESOME place about 4 years ago. Now it's run by the son of the previous owners. He is REALLY nice, and REALLY odd (keep in mind this is bolinas).
The Pros: Incredible location. Charming building and rooms. Nice guy.

The Cons: Owner's son lives in the garage and is really odd. Likes to walk around with his shirt off (he really shouldn't) and is suddenly standing behind you when you least expect. He also probably does the housekeeping (and not very well). The linen closet is a mess and the sheets and blankets were probably fantastic 5 years ago.

It's cheap (sometimes), since he makes up the prices as he goes. It's a great location, but I'd bring a sleeping bag!

The restaurant closed a few years ago, there is no breakfast and his cat lives in the kitchen.
